Root Canal Therapy in Naples
Root canal therapy treats infection or irreversible inflammation inside a tooth. The inflamed tissue is removed, the canal system is cleaned and shaped, and the space is sealed. The purpose is to keep a natural tooth that would otherwise need extraction.
Signs that evaluation is needed
Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, pain on biting, spontaneous or nighttime pain, swelling near the gum, or a darkening tooth can all indicate pulp involvement. Not every symptom means a root canal is needed, and testing is used to reach a diagnosis.
Some teeth requiring treatment have no symptoms at all and are identified on radiographs during routine examination.

What the appointment is like
With effective anesthesia, root canal treatment is generally comparable to having a filling placed. Mild tenderness for a few days afterward is common and usually managed with over-the-counter analgesics unless otherwise advised.
Restoring the tooth afterward
A treated tooth has lost structure and is more prone to fracture. In most cases a crown or other cuspal-coverage restoration is recommended, and the timing of that restoration is part of the treatment plan from the start.

Could the tooth simply be extracted instead?

Extraction is an option, but it creates a gap that usually needs replacement. Keeping a restorable natural tooth is generally preferred.
