Root canal therapy treats infection or irreversible inflammation inside a tooth. The inflamed tissue is removed, the canal system is cleaned and shaped, and the space is sealed. The purpose is to keep a natural tooth that would otherwise need extraction.
Signs that evaluation is needed
Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, pain on biting, spontaneous or nighttime pain, swelling near the gum, or a darkening tooth can all indicate pulp involvement. Not every symptom means a root canal is needed, and testing is used to reach a diagnosis.
Some teeth requiring treatment have no symptoms at all and are identified on radiographs during routine examination.
