How whitening gel works

Whitening gels use peroxide compounds that break down pigmented molecules within the tooth. The change happens inside the enamel and dentin, not on the surface, which is why polishing alone cannot produce the same effect.

Why restorations do not change color

Crowns, veneers, bonding, and fillings are inert to whitening gel. If you have restorations in the smile line, whitening the surrounding natural teeth can make them stand out. This is manageable, but it needs to be planned: whiten first, stabilize the shade, then replace the restorations to match.

Managing sensitivity

Temporary sensitivity during whitening is common and usually resolves quickly.

  • Use a desensitizing toothpaste in the weeks before treatment
  • Shorten daily wear time rather than abandoning treatment
  • Take rest days between applications if needed
  • Report persistent or severe sensitivity so it can be assessed

Why an exam should come first

Whitening gel applied over untreated decay, a leaking filling, or inflamed gums causes unnecessary discomfort and can obscure a problem that needs attention. An examination before whitening is a short step that prevents avoidable complications.
