A cosmetic consultation is not a sales meeting. Its purpose is to determine what is achievable, what is advisable, and in what order treatment should happen. That requires clinical information: the condition of each tooth, the health of the gums, how your teeth meet when you bite, and whether there is evidence of wear or fracture.
Expect photographs, a shade assessment, and possibly a digital scan. These records are the reference point for everything that follows, and they let you compare the finished result against your starting position rather than relying on memory.
Describing what you want to change
Patients often arrive with a general sense that something is not right without a precise description. That is completely normal. Working through it in specific terms is part of the appointment: is it the shade, the length of the front teeth, a gap, a chipped edge, or the way the smile sits relative to your lips?
Bringing photographs of your own smile from years earlier can be more useful than photographs of other people, because it shows what natural proportions looked like on your face.
Questions worth asking
A good consultation welcomes questions. The answers should be specific to you rather than generic.
- What is the most conservative option that could achieve this result?
- How much natural tooth structure will be involved?
- What could shorten the lifespan of this treatment?
- What maintenance will be required afterward, and how often?
- What happens if I do nothing for now?
Realistic expectations protect the outcome
Cosmetic dentistry can change a great deal, but it works within biological limits. Gum position, bone support, tooth position, and bite forces all set boundaries. A plan that acknowledges those boundaries tends to age far better than one that ignores them.
If you leave a consultation without understanding the sequence, the trade-offs, and the maintenance, ask for clarification before proceeding.
